Culinary Continuum
The field that cooks the cook
The culinary continuum is the prior field of transformations in which restricted human cookery takes place. Robin Mackay and Reza Negarestani introduce it by reversing the usual nature–culture sequence: cooked food may be cultural from a human perspective, but the evolutionary dependency on cooking belongs to nature's chemical and physiological history. Humans are cooked as well as cooks (Reza Negarestani/Texts/Collapse; Philosophical Research and Development Issue #7; Culinary Materialism - Editorial Introduction.pdf, pp. 17–18, 37). The concept therefore denies that an already constituted human subject first encounters passive ingredients.
The continuum is open, synthetic and trans-modal. Chemical reactions, military tactics, logical distributions and modal transitions are regional differentiations of one field rather than sealed domains joined afterward. In Manabrata Guha's contribution, the open blends universal constituency with tacticity: a local battlefield is only a blurred approximation of a global battlespace whose geometry is vague and whose logic is not exhausted by state axioms (Reza Negarestani/Texts/Collapse; Philosophical Research and Development Issue #7; Culinary Materialism - Editorial Introduction.pdf, pp. 12–14). para tactical engagements describes the political use of this topological mismatch.
Local openings
Local entities do not merely sit inside the continuum; their boundaries are ways the continuum reflects into itself. A chili pickle fuses global and local modalities, while industrial nitrogen binds food to bacteria, war, petroleum and stellar history. Such objects act as passages through which discrete systems encounter syntheses they cannot completely axiomatise (Reza Negarestani/Texts/Collapse; Philosophical Research and Development Issue #7; Culinary Materialism - Editorial Introduction.pdf, pp. 5–8, 13–16).
The same opening occurs in digestion. Eating makes the subject experience itself simultaneously as subject, object and anonymous matter; the ingested object cannot be sorted without remainder into what is absorbed and what is expelled. Alien traces persist as encrypted pathways into the chemical continuum (Reza Negarestani/Texts/Collapse; Philosophical Research and Development Issue #7; Culinary Materialism - Editorial Introduction.pdf, pp. 24–28). xeno economy names this failure of completed assimilation.
Non-axiomatic does not mean formless
The editorial calls the continuum non-axiomatic, but it does not equate openness with aleatory expression. AO&'s meticulously controlled meals are offered as better detectors of nonhuman contingency than mere promiscuity or procedural looseness (Reza Negarestani/Texts/Collapse; Philosophical Research and Development Issue #7; Culinary Materialism - Editorial Introduction.pdf, p. 12). The continuum must be approached through designed interventions, recipes and maps even though no intervention masters it.
Fernando Zalamea's mathematics supplies the projected discipline. Without maps and compasses adequate to an unbound continuum, philosophy rigidifies one regional opposition and mistakes it for the whole. chemophilosophy consequently couples analysis with synthesis in a synoptic practice capable of tracking mixtures, transitions and decompositions (Reza Negarestani/Texts/Collapse; Philosophical Research and Development Issue #7; Culinary Materialism - Editorial Introduction.pdf, pp. 33–35). The culinary continuum is not itself a recipe; it is the bottomless field that makes recipes possible and prevents their closure.
